Youth Empowerment & Civic Engagement

Youth, especially in institutions of higher learning, ASAL Counties, informal settlements, and rural areas, remain largely unaware of their constitutional civic rights. General apathy among youth towards civic engagement processes and lack of trust in government further exacerbates this challenge, evidenced by the low turnout to register, join political parties, and vote during the 2022 general elections. The failure to enforce the 2/3rd gender principle in Parliament further marginalizes young women from decision-making spaces. Systemic exclusion of youth remains rampant at all levels of governance, evidenced by the exclusion of youth in political appointments and other decision-making bodies, tokenistic prioritization and financing of youth empowerment, and the centralization of the national government public participation process in Nairobi, and the lack of effective mechanisms for youth representation in decision-making leading to a disconnect between grassroots youth and their representatives. Despite the notable efforts to ensure youth involvement in decision-making, the efforts have side-lined youth in higher learning institutions since most programs occur when the students are in session. While Kenya is recognized as one of the first countries in Africa to enact a comprehensive law and policy to guide national and sub-national climate action, youth are still largely excluded from formal policy and decision-making processes related to national, regional and global responses to climate change. Attempts to involve youth have often been tokenistic. Years of interventions further reveal that the concept of ‘meaningful youth engagement’ is not well-understood by policymakers, mainstream civil society organizations, the private sector, and development partners, as many are fixated on the number of youths involved and not on the quality of engagement. Our interventions includes; supporting youth-led civic and political education initiatives to instil culture of constitutionalism and pro-people governance among youth, supporting mentorship and coaching programs for youth leaders to navigate the political space, Monitoring youth participation, engagement, and representation in decision-making processes,
